"When I heard about BrainWare Safari, I immediately thought of my grandson, Gregory, who has Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD). BrainWare is helping Greg learn strategy. If he can't do an exercise because he has a problem with his ADD, he develops a strategy so that he can find a way to do it. He learns how to use his brain in dfferent ways to help him with his speed. We're seeing benefits we never thoguht we would get which are helping us combat his deficiency."
Give Your Child the Advantage of a Lifetime
Each mind develops uniquely, with its own special strengths and areas that could be stronger. Neuroscientists now agree that mental strengths and weaknesses (often referred to as intelligence) is not fixed and that cognitive skills (the mental processes our brains use to take in, understand, store and retrieve information) can be developed.
Parents may choose to have their child use BrainWare SAFARI for a number of reasons. Use the links below to explore the specific areas in more depth.
Whatever your reason or motivation, there are a few things you should know about BrainWare SAFARI.
BrainWare SAFARI is recommended for ages 6 through adult. Children should know the alphabet and their numbers through 100, and they need to be able to manipulate a computer mouse to use the program.
This cognitive training program is unique. It works on a broader range of skills than other brain training programs. There are many "brain games" on the market, but BrainWare SAFARI is not a game (although it looks like a video-game). The "games" in BrainWare are actually exercises derived from clinical therapy. The exercises develop and integrate skills (like cross-training for the mind).
The recommended usage for BrainWare SAFARI for most users is 3 to 5 times a week for 12 to 14 weeks, for 30 to 60 minutes per session. The reason for this recommendation is that it is the frequency of usage that has shown dramatic gains in cognitive skills and academic performance in multiple research studies.
BrainWare SAFARI runs on a computer, either a PC or a Mac. There is software that is installed on your computer and it requires an Internet connection. The computer must have speakers. A headset and a mouse are recommended.
BrainWare SAFARI can be used by children at home, with a parent, grandparent, other adult, or even an older sibling serving as their Coach. The role of the Coach is to help the child stay on track with the recommended usage and to encourage and support them throughout their use of the program. We provide information for parents as their child starts on the program on how to make it the best experience possible. Many parents tell us that BrainWare time with their child strenthened the parent-child bond.
Cogntiive skills development can benefit children across a broad spectrum of abilities, including normally developing, those with identified cognitive deficits and high-performing children. The following links provide additional information on how BrainWare Cognitive Skills Training works for different types of individuals.
Having a child with learning disabilities often means that the child and parents all experience a good deal of frustration. As hard as they try, school work is too often a struggle. The interventions provided by most schools tend to focus on accommodations and other strategies to work around a child's weakensses. BrainWare SAFARI doesn’t just teach children how to compensate for weak processing areas. It uses your child’s strengths to build weaker areas.
There is not a cure for ADHD, but there are approaches that parents and schools find helpful. BrainWare SAFARI works on cognitive skills that are typically weak for children with ADHD, including attention (sustained and selective attention), auditory and visual working memory, and other executive functions. It is estimated that 30 to 50% of children with ADHD also have learning disabilities.
Using BrainWare SAFARI has been shown in multiple studies to improve cognitive functioning. Average improvements on cogntiive tests like the CogAT of 12 percentile points have been demonstrated. In one school study, using BrainWare SAFARI helped significantly more students quality for the gifted program.
An Autism Spectrum Diagnosis (ASD) can mean many things and BrainWare SAFARI is not for all children with ASD. Generally, we find that the program can be used successfully by children with ASD who are at least 8 and/or who are higher functioning. Cognitive skill development with BrainWare SAFARI can be a piece of the puzzle for some children with an Autism Spectrum Diagnosis.
