BrainWare SAFARI and Vision Therapy

The College of Optometrists in Vision Development, the organization that certifies eye doctors and vision therapists who provide developmental vision care, vision therapy and visual rehabilitation lists six learning related vision issues addressed by vision therapy:

  • eye tracking skills - eyes following a line of print
  • eye teaming skills - two eyes working together as a synchronized team
  • binocular vision - simultaneously blending the images from both eyes into one image
  • accommodation - eye focusing
  • visual-motor integration - eye-hand coordination
  • visual perception - visual memory, visual form perception, and visualization

Many vision development specialists use BrainWare in conjunction with vision therapy, especially to address that last two learning-related vision issues – visual-motor integration and visual perception.  Because BrainWare SAFARI can be used by the patient at home, it can be incorporated as an adjunct to in-office vision therapy or as a follow-on to an in-office program to reinforce and extend the integration of visual integration and visual perception skills.

BrainWare SAFARI has developed a diagnostic protocol which can be used to enhance the traditional eye by uncovering  visual system deficits not easily identified otherwise, and making it easy for a parent to immediately grasp that their child has a visual system problem, and accept the treatment recommendation.

Parents Say ... Equip Them for Life

by John Y. (Kendall, Age 11, and Clay, Age 8)

"We've definitely seen some improvement with our children. Parents will do pretty much anything to help their kids and equip them for life later on. This is definitely a tool to do that."

Educators Say ... It Meets Students’ Brain Development Needs

by Stephanie Brown, Reading & Math Coach, IN

"With BrainWare Safari, my students had the opportunity to develop their cognitive skills while playing intellectual games that the program provided. The students were highly motivated, with little exception, throughout. I would not hesitate to recommend use of BrainWare Safari in schools. It meets students' brain development needs while working through a technology medium that students crave. It truly was a wonderful experience."

Educators Say ... Helping Our Students Close Academic Gaps

by Anne Budicin, Resource Teacher, Glenwood School

"Because of our students' backgrounds, we are always striving to provide them with opportunities that close academic gaps and help them achieve their true potential. BrainWare Safari is an essential part of achieving this. It helped our students improve their shor-term, long-term and working memory. Teachers have seen improvement in attentiveness during lessons and noted better recall of information. Ultimately, BrainWare Safari helps to prepare our students for high school and beyond by bridging those gaps in achievement and cognitive processing."

Adult Users Say ... I’m Using the Focusing Techniques I Learned

by Leah Petrusiak, Journalist

"When I was a freshman in high school, my teacher told my dad, 'Leah doesn't know how to think.' As time went on, I realized I had trouble piecing together how certain events culminated in larger happenings. I often forgot events in my own history. While I've dealt with my disconnects in a number of ways, I decided to check out BrainWare Safari. Not only can a clinician use it to spot your trouble spots, you'll quickly find them out on your own--and your strengths as well. One unexpected benefit I realized was an improvement in my art-making ability. If found that I was more in tune with how textures, colors and sequences play off each other, having worked on the exercises that force you to from one complete picture in your head from three boards of Tic Tac Toe. I am also using the focusing techniques I learned when I throw my hat on top of my credit card and am able to form a mental picture of where it is."

Grandparents Say ... More Focused in School

by Donna C. (Brendan (Age 12)

"The first time Brendan used BrainWare Safari, he became so thoroughly engaged with the activities that he did not want to stop. He actually set his alarm clock an hour early the next morning so he could do more BrainWare before leaving for school. When his parents went to their parent-teacher conference recently, after he had been using the program for several weeks, his teacher was very impressed. She observed that he is more focused in school and more confident in his ability to independently complete his classroom and homework assignments."

Kids Say ... I’ve Gotten Better at Listening

by Drew D. (Age 10)

"I've gotten better at listening. I used to misunderstand stuff because I didn't read the instructions and got right to work, but BrainWare Safari taught me to slow down and double-check my work."

Educators Say ... A Major Breakthrough in Education

by Dr. Lou Barber, Former State Asst. Supt., CA

"When I became aware of the effectiveness of BrainWare Safari, I recognized the potential contribution this program could make to the educational field. It basically provides a process by which the brain learns how to learn. BrainWare Safari is a well-designed series of brain exercises in a game format that works for all learners--school-age students aged 6 and older, as well as adults. It is truly a major breakthrough in education and has unlimited potential for individuals with disability as well as those with high-level academic ability."

Homeschooling Parents Say ... I Find the Exercises Challenging for Myself

by J.Detweiler, Homeschooling Parent

"My daughter, who is 8 years old, really enjoys BrainWare Safari. She has Sensory Processing Disorder; her vision and auditory system are impacted by this. The games do a great job targeting the skills she needs improvement on. We've found some of the games are similar to exercises her vision therapist was having her do. The one exception though is BrainWare Safari does it in a way that's more fun. As a parent, I enjoy watching her play the games and find them challenging for myself."

Educators Say ... More Rapidly Closes the Gap in Skills That Are Difficult to Remediate

by Sheila Govern, Principal, Lyons Elementary, AZ

"Students who used BrainWare Safari in 3rd grade and returned in 4th grade reduced the gap between their performance and expectation by at least half on reading tests. Students who used the program in 4th grade and returned in 5th grade reduced the gap by 75%. We currently focus on using the program with Title I students because it helps them more rapidly close the gap by developing skills they lack and that are difficult to remediate in any other way. We wish funding permitted us to use the program with all of our students."

Parents Say ... Other Programs Don’t Have the Depth of Research

by Sue D. (Michael, Age 12)

BrainWare is more intensive and strategic in terms of building connections in the brain. It's wonderful! Other games don't have the depth of research behind them."
